It’s time to share the May 2024 Sewing Challenges! Lots to join in with once again, so head over to the Challenges section in Stash Hub to save your favourites. I post a sewing challenge roundup each month, so check out the posts from January to April for more sewing inspiration. You can still use the ideas, even if the challenge has finished now.
May 2024 Sewing Challenges
Me Made May
It’s been almost 15 years since Zoe @sozoblog accidentally started the sewing community phenomenon Me Made May. This is a personal challenge aimed at helping you learn more about your handmade wardrobe.
Made May isn’t a competition, it’s a personal challenge. With that in mind, create your own pledge that encourages you to intentionally wear your self-made garments more or in different combinations. To get the most out of this month, create a pledge that is challenging but do-able. You can choose to share your pledge or keep it to yourself.
For more information about Me Made May, check out Zoe’s blog or episode #84 of Check Your Thread podcast.
Seated Makes Challenge
How often do you share photos of yourself sitting in your handmade garments? Getting a good fit is one of the most satisfying parts about creating your own handmade garments, but the fit when seated is often overlooked. The body can spread when sitting down which can cause pulling or tightness is some areas.
Seeing seated garments is especially important for wheelchair users, but can benefit everyone in the sewing community, as it helps us make decisions about which patterns to choose and if we may need to make any adjustments for practicality and comfort.
To join in with the Seated Makes Challenge, share photos of yourself sitting down in your handmade garments and tag @lolieya and @thewheeliestitcher with hashtags #sewnshownseated and #seatedmakeschallenge2024.
Minimal May
This month’s theme for the Make A Garment A Month challenge is ‘Minimal May’. This is a great chance to shop your fabric stash to create something for minimal cost (we all know that by the logic of Sewist Math, stash fabric is FREE!). Another option is the minimal waste route, where you could try out a zero waste pattern or work on your pattern Tetris skills to optimise your cutting layouts. Or opt for a minimalist style and create a simple garment. This could tie in well with Me Made May if you discover your handmade wardobe is lacking basics. Creatively interpret the theme to make a garment you love!
Share your finished garment to Instagram and tag #MagamMinimalMay #magamsewalong @suestoney @sewing_in_spain and @lizhaywood3754
Sew Autumn Denim
The sewists of the southern hemisphere are heading into autumn, but you’re welcome to join in with this challenge wherever you are in the world. Denim is a versatile fabric and a wardrobe staple for all times of year.
Get creative and sew any project using denim. This could be a great opportunity for some upcycling or to finally tackle those jeans you’ve been planning for ages…
To join in on Instagram, sew a project using denim and post before the end of May. Tag hosts @create_something_pretty, @db_designs_australia and @sewingseamswithdeb. Watch Deb’s YouTube video for more details about the Sew Autumn Denim challenge.
The Springbreak Sewing Challenge
Grab a fabric with a playful design and at least three different colours to create a spring outfit! The brief for this challenge is very open to interpretation, as you can sew any garment you choose. Just make sure the fabric design includes at least three colours.
To join in, share your colourful creations on Instagra and tag host @seidenkaetzchen_by_dina with the hashtag #WeAreSewingQueens. If you want to get more inspiration and join in with the creative exchange, there will be a Discord server, where you can join either the English or German group of sewists joining this challenge.
Continuing Sewing Challenges
You’ve got another month to salvage those failed projects with the #SewingBinToSewingWin challenge. Find out more in last month’s challenge roundup. Make Nine and Last Sewist Standing run througout the year.
