What do you need motivation with this month? Sewing a summery dress, using up fabric scraps or just sewing through your stash in general? These August 2024 sewing challenges might be just the thing! As always, the sewing community has blessed us with another great selection of challenges to get our creative juices flowing this month. Find out more about how to enter in the Challenges section in Stash Hub and link challenges to your sewing project plans so you don’t forget to enter. Let’s find out about the August 2024 sewing challenges on offer:
August 2024 Sewing Challenges
Whole 30 Fabric Challenge
This challenge from @pinkmimosabyjacinta is mega motivation to sew your stash fabrics! Pledge to sew 30 yards of fabric from your stash and don’t buy anything until you’ve done so. If you purchase anything, you have to start the 30 yards over again, so this sewing challenge is a real test of willpower.
Jacinta has lots of ideas to help you stay strong through this challenge. There’s a bingo chart with mini-challenges to inspire your makes. You’re not alone in this challenge! Jacinta will be sharing her own progress for solidarity and you can share your milestone badges to social media to celebrate your stash sewing achievements.
When sharing your posts on Instagram use tags #Whole30FabricChallenge2024 and tag host @pinkmimosabyjacinta.
Sun’s Out, Sundresses On
The idea behind the “Sun’s Out Sundresses On” Sewing Challenge is to make dresses suitable for summer! While there may be some debate on what defines a sundress, this challenge’s only stipulation is to make something sleeveless or with short sleeves.
There will be prizes up for grabs for this challenge, so make sure to tag the hosts @surgefabricshop, @fluidplusdrape, @pdxsewingstudio and @fabricksfabrics and use the hashtag #SunsOutSundressesOn to be in with a chance of winning.
There is also a Discord server if you want to share your project plans, mull over fabric options or ask for pattern suggestions.
Summer of Scraps
Is your pile of fabric scraps starting to mount up? Join Bekah @fiber.and.floral in this challenge to get creative and work through some of your scraps and remnants. Share your scrappy makes to Instagram with #SewScrappy and host @fiber.and.floral in your post.
To get started, go through your scraps and sort them according to colour and fibre content so you can get an idea of which ones you can combine together into a project. Make some project plans and/or set a goal of the amount of scraps you want to get through as motivation. There is lots of inspiration from @fiber.and.floral and the #SewScrappy hashtag, so check those out for inspiration.
Patterns with small fabric requirements such as tank tops and Camis can be a good way to use remnants. Try patchwork or colour blocking to use up multiple scrap fabrics in one project
Sewn with Big 5
This monthly challenge celebrates the amazing community of makers sewing with Big 5 patterns. To enter, sew any patterns from the Big 5 brands including Simplicity, McCall’s, Vogue, Know Me, Butterick, New Look and Burda to be in with a chance of winning a pattern voucher to spend on the Sew Direct website.
The Big 5 collection is enormous, so you’ll have plenty of patterns to choose from. To enter the August prize draw, use #SewnWithBig5Aug and tag @simplicitymccallsuk
This challenge is open to UK and Europe only and you can enter as many times as you like. The winner will be chosen by public vote from a shortlist of three and contacted via the @simplicitymccallsuk Instagram account.
Stitching Adventures
#StitchingAdventures, an excuse to get out and about (or inside and cozy) with our handmade clothes. Whether an adventure, to you, is an intrepid hike, or a marathon film night at home, all kinds – big, small, and micro – are welcome here. This challenge from @in_a_haystack and @fabric.lady.steph is a great opportunity to share older makes and remember the great times you had wearing them.
There are lots of sponsors for this challenge, which means lots of great sewing prizes up for grabs! All you need to do to join in is share a photo of ourself or someone you have sewn for, wearing a me-made, upcycled or repaired item, and tell us about your adventure before the closing date on 14th September. Use #StitchingAdventures and tag hosts @in_a_haystack and @fabric.lady.steph to join in.
Excited to hear about your adventures!
Sew Up Summer Dress
Another sewing challenge bringing you encouragement from the sewing community to sew up a summer dress! This challenge is hosted by @jessica_be_happy throughout July and August, so be sure to tag her in your makes with #SewUpSummerDress.
Use a sewing pattern from an indie designer and consider the fun details that make for the perfect summer dress – straps, short sleeves, gathers or ruffles. This is also a great opportunity to showcase a bright summery print. Check out Jessica’s YouTube video for ideas and suggestions of different patterns you could use.
Sew Reversible 2024
Try your hand at making a reversible garment for #SewReversible2024. Your garment could be worn two ways, which differ by turning the garment “inside out”. Reversible garments are perfect for when you have to travel light – you’ve got one garment with two looks! The process of sewing something reversible can also be a fun test for you sewing skills, as you have to pay close attention to the finishing so it looks just as good inside and out. Follow @annmareesworkshop for tips and pattern suggestions for reversible garments.
To join in with this sewing challenge, sew something reversible and post it to Instagram before 31st August with #SewReversible2024 and tag host @annmareesworkshop. There are prizes up fro grabs for this challenge to help you get even more motovated!
Continuing Sewing Challenges
In addition to the August 2024 sewing challenges listed above, there are some challenges from July’s round up that are continuing into August.
The reveal date for the Standing Tall Quilt-Along is on the 27th August so I hope your quilts are coming along well. If this is your first time hearing about this challenge, you might still have time to join in if you really crack on!
The Winter of Care and Repair is well underway for the southern hemisphere. The winter months are a perfect opportunity to focus on caring for yourself and your belongings.
If you want to work through your stash but don’t feel like you have the willpower to complete the Whole 30 Fabric Challenge, the #2FromStashAMonth challenge might be more up your street. A very manageable challenge, all you have to do is sew two stash fabrics each month.
